♰Trinity: Mystery abounds.

I’ll spend my life trying to put words to the unfathomable mystery of God. It’s an impossible task, and still, I do it — putting pen to paper, trying to work out the expansive eternal mystery with my slanted, sloppy scrawl.

This week, we observe Trinity Sunday. Throughout millennia, humanity has tried to use things like similes and metaphors to explain the nature of a triune God.

But creation putting words to Creator will always come up short.

How could it not?

Musicians play melodies, sculptors fashion clay, and while sometimes we touch heaven, the Mystery abides.

God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

A Prayer

I wrote “A Prayer for Trinity Sunday” for To Light Their Way: A Collection of Prayers and Liturgies for Parents. If it serves you, borrow it.

God, blessed Trinity,

Divine mystery,

We come to You,

Reminded that You are God—

Bigger in every way,

More of everything,

More tender and more powerful,

More mighty and more merciful.

O God, blessed Trinity,

We are not left alone.

You call us beloved.

We come to You, Lord,

In awe of all we will never

Understand about

Your great love.

For You are a God who dwells

In community,

In unity,

And in one and equal glory.

O God, blessed Trinity,

In all we teach our children,

In all we live ourselves,

May we honor You

In all that we are,

In all that we have.

For You are with us,

And it’s in the holiest name

Of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

We pray.

Amen.

“A Prayer for Trinity Sunday” is on page 166 of To Light Their Way: A Collection of Prayers and Liturgies for Parents.

If my prayers have spoken to you, please consider supporting my work by purchasing copies for friends and family, too. I appreciate you!

Guest Liturgy

Feeling insecure as a parent is real, especially when you were not always parented well when you were a child.

Tori Hope Petersen
wrote a guest liturgy for us in honor of National Foster Care Awareness Month.

From Tori: “My experience in foster care as a former foster youth, foster care advocate, & foster mom fuels my life’s passion to raise up & nurture my own family, as well as advocate for those without family. My heart is burdened for the foster care community, foster youth, vulnerable youth, & suffering families.”

Tori is an amazing writer, speaker, and advocate. I’m honored that we can share her words. May this prayer comfort parents who hold quiet hurts and bring empathy and compassion to those who were raised in healthy, secure, loving homes.

Breath Prayer

As you breathe :

  • Feel the gentle whisper of the Holy Spirit surrounding you.

  • Relax your shoulders and let your heart settle, reflecting on the unity and mystery found in the Trinity.

Take a moment to inhale and center yourself in God’s presence:
